Farmers continue to worry about stressed crops as the growing season winds down, with ratings and yield projections reported to Feedback From The Field declining again last week. While the variation in yield potential remains wide, median yields reported in August so far are in line with estimates made Aug. 10 by USDA.

The median corn yield is 177.5 bushels per acre, with beans at 51 bpa, both just a touch lighter than USDA found. But corn yields last week alone ranged from just 60 bpa in drought-hit northwest Missouri to 215 bpa in central Indiana and north central Iowa. The soybean variation ran from 25 bpa in Missouri to a 75 bpa estimate noted in Louisiana.

“Bone dry,” said one of the Missouri producers whose corn is drying down rapidly. “Soybeans at a standstill.”

“Very dry,” was all a Nebraska farmer needed to sum up 90-bushel corn and 41 bpa soybeans.

Even in states with good yields like Illinois, all wasn’t perfect. “Big cracks forming in the ground, said a producer south of Chicago with 158 bpa  corn and 42 bpa beans.

But the Indiana farm with 215 bpa corn saw crops turn around after a bumpy start. “After a dry May, the rains have been "just in time" and very adequate to keep this crop going,” was the report. “The cool down in mid-July extended kernel fill so kernel depth and test weight should be good.”
