Arizona Agri-Weekly: cotton squaring at 67 percent

Cotton squaring in Arizona at 67 percent; Cotton crop quality ranges from fair to excellent; Arizona growers harvested grapefruit, cantaloupe, honeydew, and other melons; No precipitation at the 22 AZMET weather stations. 

The latest Arizona Agri-Weekly report from the National Agricultural Statistics Service Field Office in Phoenix, Ariz., released June 27.

Field crops

Squaring has occurred on 67 percent of Arizona’s cotton acreage, ahead of the five-year average of 53 percent. Approximately 20 percent of the acreage has set bolls mostly in the Yuma area. The condition of the cotton crop varies from fair to excellent.

Alfalfa condition is mostly good to excellent. Harvesting is active on nearly three-fourths of the acreage across the state.

Vegetable, fruit, and specialty crops

Arizona growers harvested grapefruit, cantaloupe, honeydew, and other melons.

Weather summary

Temperatures were mostly above normal for the week ending June 26, ranging from 4 degrees below normal at Parker to 6 degrees above normal at Marana, Phoenix, and Prescott.

The highest temperature of the week was 112 degrees at Phoenix and Roll. The lowest reading was 25 degrees at Grand Canyon.

No precipitation was recorded at any of the 22 AZMET weather stations. All weather stations, except in Kingman, have below normal precipitation to date.
