U of A Webinar series to examine ‘Deep freeze for grain markets?’

“El Nino brought unusually warm temperatures to the U.S. this fall. But a deep freeze may have already set in over the grain market, even before the onset of winter,” says Bobby Coats, professor of agricultural economic and agribusiness at the University of Arkansas and moderator of the webinar series.

Farmers have been struggling with profit margins ever since corn and soybean futures began to tumble nearly two years ago. Now, forecasts of bigger-than-expected grain crops for 2016 are putting even more pressure on producer returns.

Bryce Knorr, senior grain market analyst for Farm Futures, will address those issues in the next University of Arkansas Systems Division of Agriculture Food and Agribusiness Webinar at 2 p.m. on Tuesday (Nov. 17).

The title of the webinar will be “Deep Freeze For Grain Markets? Managing Risk and Margins in a Difficult Marketing Year: Bryce Knorr, senior grain market analyst, Farm Futures. To register for the webinar, go to https://uaex.zoom.us/webinar/register/c8d2c425e761eebe34538d7d4481ef37.

“El Nino brought unusually warm temperatures to the U.S. this fall. “Bryce Knorr, who has been a guest on our programs before will address the question: ‘What are the prospects for rallies headed into 2016, and what should growers be doing to manage risk and margins in a difficult year?’”

The next webinar in the Food and Agribusiness Series, which will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday (Nov. 19), will feature a presentation by Nathan Childs, senior agricultural economist with the USDA Economic Research Service.

Current supply and demand estimates for both the U.S. and global rice markets will be presented, as well as U.S. price forecasts,” says Dr. Coats. “The 2015-16 U.S. market is being impacted by a smaller crop, rising U.S. prices and a widening price difference over Asian competitors.

“Globally, adverse weather in several major exporting countries has reduced the global supply outlook and pushed prices higher. This presentation will utilize supply and demand estimates from the November WASDE Report.
