Harvest is over . . . now what?

Grape growers know that even when harvest is over, their work isn’t quite finished yet – they need to plan ahead for winter weed control. Weeds can make it problematic to maintain healthy vineyards during the winter months.

In California, grape growers should be aware of bothersome weeds such as glyphosate-resistant horseweed (marestail), fleabane and ryegrass, which are easiest to control when they measure less than 3-4 inches tall and are still growing.

CASORON® Herbicide, from Arysta LifeScience, is an excellent choice for control of glyphosate-resistant horseweed (marestail), fleabane and ryegrass as well as other hard-to-kill weeds such as Bermudagrass, bindweed and horsetail (Equisetum spp.). Dichlobenil, the active ingredient in CASORON, features powerful, broad-spectrum activity. It is a pre-emergent and early post-emergent herbicide which provides a highly effective, long-lasting herbicidal barrier that controls both germinating seeds and young, existing weeds by inhibiting growth of roots and shoots.

Researchers at Rutgers University studied vineyards to determine best practices for weed control. The field trials included herbicide treatments applied in late fall or residual applications in late winter or early spring when no late fall treatment had been applied.

The Rutgers team found that CASORON, when applied in late fall followed by a spring application of a residual annual grass herbicide, proved to be the most effective residual weed control program recommended for vineyards. This research also showed that CASORON applied in late fall provides annual broadleaf weed control through harvest and annual grass control through early summer of the following year. Certain herbaceous perennials, such as goldenrod species and yellow nutsedge, were also controlled or suppressed by a late-fall application of CASORON.
