Six young people attending various universities across the country recently were named winners in the Accelerating a Generation Syngenta Scholarship Program. Madison Hargarten, one of the six winners, hails from Winchester, Ind. She is a student at Purdue University.

Pam Caraway, communications lead for Syngenta, says the goal is to let students know that industry is behind them as they train for a future role in agriculture. These students were selected partially because based on their applications, they have the tools to become young leaders in agriculture.

The National FFA coordinates this scholarship program in partnership with Syngenta. Each winner receives a $2,500 scholarship, plus the opportunity to select a charity of his or her choice for an additional $500 donation from Syngenta. Hargarten selected Winchester Community Garden to receive Syngenta’s donation.

Hargarten told Syngenta spokespersons that the scholarship will help relieve the financial stress associated with attending college. She added that she is passionate about agriculture, and loves being immersed in ag-related activities, from being in her barn to mentoring younger kids interested in agriculture.

Other winners who received scholarships included: Breanna Chavez, Gilmer, Texas; Leah Hudson, Topeka, Kan.; LeAnne Pace, Mount Hope, Ala.; Leslie Webb, Greenwood, Del.; and Elsie Wilkins, Tekoa, Wash.
