Extended diapause

In the article titled “Working the system” [July/August, p. 4], you talk about the Suiters in Earl Park, IN. The article mentions that the Suiter farm has been diagnosed with an infestation of extended diapause corn rootworms. I believe that if you check it you will find that in Indiana and Illinois, we have what is called the soybean variant corn rootworm, not the extended diapause. The areas that have problems with the extended diapause are Minnesota and South Dakota. I thought that this was a very good article, but wanted a little clarification on this subject.

Editor's response: Good catch. Extended diapause rootworms have the ability to remain dormant through a year of soybean rotation. But several years ago, a new problem arose with western corn rootworm in first-year corn in north-central Illinois and Indiana. Rather than lay their eggs in cornfields, these move to soybean fields to feed and lay eggs. The following year when the field is used for corn production, rootworm injury occurs.
