This year’s Virginia Small Grains Field Day will be held Thursday, May 17 at Virginia Tech’s Eastern Virginia Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Warsaw.
The field day will highlight the small grains research that is being conducted at Virginia Tech. An integral part of this field day will be to showcase current, new, and pr-release varieties in Dr. Carl Griffey’s small grain breeding program.
This will include durum and hard red wheat variety development, malt barley variety development, soft red wheat variety development, hulled feed barley variety development, and hulless barley variety development. There will also be stops showing the state wheat variety trial, current scab research and breeding efforts, research on micro-organisms associated with FHB control, wheat nitrogen use efficiency research, and a wheat date of planting study.
After the field tour, there will be a short indoor program with updates from Virginia Tech researchers and industry personnel. Attendees will also have the opportunity to visit with several vendors. The event will conclude with lunch provided by Nixon’s Catering. After lunch, there will be an opportunity for those interested in malt barley to meet and look at the barley tests and increases more in depth.
