Northeast Texas wheat yields post record yields

In spite of multiple freezes, 2014 wheat harvest may “be one for the record books,” for Northeast Texas farmers.

As producers completed harvest in early July, some reported yields approaching triple digits with most averaging 80 bushels per acre or better. Timely rain, little disease pressure and a bit of luck helped the area produce its third good crop in a row.

June rainfall may have extended harvest season a bit, but farmers said they ran the combines between showers to get the crop in.

Wheat across the Southwest has not fared as well with yields limited by prolonged drought and freeze damage late in the season.
