1. This year's Winter Wheat Quality Tour covered everything from snow-covered wheat to really good-looking wheat. Participants were learning on-the-go during this year's tour, as they looked at wheat buried under several inches of snow for four days. Agronomists say they will need to wait and see how the wheat turns out. 2. Bird flu has been detected in Mexico, according to the World Organisation for Animal Health. The outbreak of H7N3 was discovered on a commercial farm near the town of Tepatitlan de Morelos in the state of Jalisco. It has been quarantined. - Reuters

3. The U.K. government needs to agree to a transition deal with the European Union to prevent "potentially disastrous" effects on the nation's farms as a result of Brexit, according to a report from the British House of Lords. – Farm Futures

4. Pork has been the fastest-growing protein in food service since 2011, outpacing both chicken and turkey. Pork use increased by 1.145 billion pounds. – Wallaces Farmer

5. As one of his first major actions, Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue rolled back school nutrition standards put in place to make school lunches healthier. Perdue said schools were having a hard time meeting the standards. – Farm Futures 

6. Globally respected University of Minnesota veterinarian Robert Morrison was killed Tuesday in a car crash in the Czech Republic. Morrison, his wife, Jeanie, and colleagues Gordon Spronk and Tom Wetzell and their wives, Deb Spronk and Pam Wetzell, were in the country for a swine health management conference in Prague. Deb Spronk and Pam Wetzell were also killed in the crash. - StarTribune

7. ADM reported net earnings of $339 million for the quarter ended March 31, 2017, with adjusted earnings per share up 43% over the prior year quarter. – Farm Futures

And your bonus. House and Senate negotiators agreed on a compromise to keep the government running.

The Senate on Thursday voted for a compromise spending bill that will keep the government running through September. The House approved the spending measure a day before. It now goes to the president for his signature. – CNN

The measure directs USDA to study options for helping cotton growers and dairy farmers. – Delta Farm Press

Four Midwest Republicans, including Sens. Charles Grassley of Iowa and John Thune of South Dakota, told Senate leaders they wanted a change in ethanol policy in exchange for their votes on the measure. – Farm Futures
