What do you do with a million babies? Researchers and faculty at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) Aquaculture Research Station knew exactly what to do when 1.4 million fry (baby fish), donated by Anderson Minnow Farm of Lonoke, Ark., arrived recently.
The fry were stocked into prepared ponds at a rate of 1 million fish per acre and are being fed one of two experimental diets as part of a UAPB research study focusing on improving the diet of the fry stage of golden shiners.
Fish growth and pond water quality are being monitored through the production process. The survival of golden shiner fry in ponds is a bottleneck to the production of large numbers of healthy market-size fish.
