Arkansas growers could soon have more burndown options if a proposed rule is ultimately approved by Arkansas Agriculture Department’s full Joint Budget Committee.Ron Smith

A proposed emergency rule clarifying which three dicamba products (Engenia, Fexapan, and Xtendimax) may be used for burndown from April 16 through May 25 was approved by the Arkansas Agriculture Department’s Plant Board this past Friday, March 22, 2019.

The burndown applications the proposed emergency rule addresses are subject to buffer zones established in the dicamba rule that went into effect on March 11. The additional restriction was added to prevent the use of dicamba products labeled for aerial application without buffer zones.

The proposed rule must now go before Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson for review. If Hutchinson approves the proposed rule, it will be sent to the Joint Budget Committee’s Administrative Rule and Regulation Review Committee, and then the full Joint Budget Committee of the Arkansas legislature for review and final approval.

The Plant Board also clarified the definition of specialty crops, buffer zones for non-tolerant crops, and organic operations. These clarifications and answers to other frequently asked questions will be published on the Arkansas Agriculture Department’s website www.aad.arkansas.gov.

This information was provided by the Arkansas Agricultural Department which works to develop and implement policies and programs for Arkansas agriculture and forestry to keep Arkansas farmers and ranchers competitive in national and international markets while ensuring safe food, fiber and forest products for the citizens of the state and union.
