Call it a tale of two weather systems.

This weekend will bring widespread rain and snow to Northern California, with precipitation expected to start north of I-80 early this evening, then become widespread by midnight, according to National Weather Service forecasters in Sacramento.

Snow levels will start low this evening, descending to 2,500 feet for Shasta County, then rise above 5,000 feet Saturday. For the northern Sierra, they start at 4,000 feet and rise to over 6,500 feet Saturday afternoon. There will be an 18-24 hour break in the precipitation before the second system arrives.

Sunday's weather system will bring another round of widespread rain and high mountain snow. Snow levels will remain high but the accumulations at the passes above 6,500 feet will likely be around a foot of additional snow.
