The California Board of Food and Agriculture meets in Tulare, Calif., in early 2020.
The Board of Food and Agriculture will hear from regional water stakeholders, state officials and nonprofit associations.

The California State Board of Food and Agriculture will be hearing from regional water stakeholders, state officials and nonprofit associations on continuing work related to water recharge and environmental restoration.

Specific focus will be on the Sacramento River Science Partnership, a collaborative effort to monitor recovery and water management on the Sacramento River. The meeting will be held Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2020 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. via GoToWebinar.

The board will also hear an update on statewide broadband issues from representatives of the state Department of Technology.

“California’s framework for water resilience includes protecting and enhancing natural systems while also maintaining and diversifying water supplies,” said CDFA Secretary Karen Ross.  “Opportunities for increased groundwater recharge and environmental restoration are critical for California and our state’s farmers and ranchers who are the primary custodians of our working lands.”

Invited speakers include: Julie Leimbach, Kearns & West; Thad Bettner, Glenn-Colusa Irrigation District; Evan Sawyer, NOAA Fisheries (West Coast Region); Dr. Denise Reed, University of New Orleans; Dr. Daniel Mountjoy, Sustainable Conservation; James Wieking, California Department of Water Resources; Justin Cohan-Shapiro and Stephanie Tom, California Department of Technology; and Rachael O’Brien, California Department of Food and Agriculture.

“As a farmer in a critically overdrafted groundwater basin, I understand changes will need to occur that will impact my local community and regional agricultural production,” said President Don Cameron, California State Board of Food and Agriculture. “Resources to help us manage water more efficiently and promote wide-scale groundwater recharge are needed and must continue to be at forefront of policy discussions.”

The California State Board of Food and Agriculture advises the governor and CDFA secretary on agricultural issues and consumer needs. The Board conducts forums that bring together local, state and federal government officials; agricultural representatives; and citizens to discuss current issues and concerns to California agriculture.
