Napa County, Calif.’s 2016 crop report details a $737 million value in agricultural production, a whopping 33 percent increase over 2015, according to Agricultural Commissioner Greg Clark.

Total wine grape values also soared 33 percent to a record high $729,507,300 last year, up $182,573,400 from the previous year. Wine grape crop values in 2016 increased about 38 percent compared to the previous 10-year average of $529 million.

Wine grape tonnage last year increased about 29,000 tons to 153,046 total tons on 43,449 bearing acres, up 3.9 percent.

Commissioner Clark says the average price paid to grape growers last year for 'all grapes' was $4,767/ton. The highest price paid for a single variety was $7,144 per ton for Cabernet Franc (1,140 bearing acres).

Over the last several years, Napa County’s top three varietals in bearing acreage have been Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Merlot. These three represented 70 percent of all production in the county and nearly 80 percent of the total wine grape value.

Last year, Napa County grape growers produced about 67,000 tons of Cabernet Sauvignon on more than 20,000 acres with an average tonnage price at $6,830. Chardonnay, grown on about 6,400 acres, included nearly 26,000 tons with an average grower price at $2,673 ton. Merlot production at 14,916 tons sold for an average $3,352/ton.

Looking at other crops, the value of Napa County olive production increased about $156,600 while livestock production increased $1,485,600.

On the downside, the value of vegetable production decreased by $72,800 in 2016 while floral and nursery production values fell by more than $383,000. The reductions were partly tied to drought.
