Valent to market new soybean rust fungicide

U.S. soybean growers worried about Asian soybean rust will have a new fungicide to use as their first line of defense against the disease. Valent U.S.A. Corp. will market Domark, a fungicide invented and developed by Isagro SpA.

“Valent has entered into an agreement with Isagro USA to market Domark for control of soybean rust in the U.S.,” said Anita Dale, senior director of new business development for Valent, which is headquartered in Walnut Creek, Calif.

The active ingredient in Domark is tetraconazole, a triazole fungicide with both preventative and curative activity to control soybean rust. Domark's control of soybean rust will insure maximum yield potential for U.S. soybean growers, Dale said.

“Domark has a proven track record against soybean rust,” said Dennis Krass, president of Isagro USA. “This is the third year it has been used in Brazil, and it has been recognized as one of the premier fungicides for controlling the disease. It is also being sold in Argentina this year and has shown excellent results in farmers' fields. In addition, Domark has provided excellent results in USDA trials conducted in South America and South Africa.”

Jamie Nielson, Valent Midwest market manager, recommends that Domark be used as the first fungicide applied to control soybean rust.

“Domark will provide U.S. growers with a single product offering both preventative and curative properties against this yield-robbing disease,” Nielson said. “This dual action will provide growers with the confidence of knowing that they can use one product to prevent the infection of their soybeans with rust, and if infection has already occurred at the time of application, Domark will act to stop the spread of the disease in the field.”

Isagro USA plans to submit Domark for full Section 3 registration for soybeans from the Environmental Protection Agency in 2005.
