Utility Vehicles (UVs) Load Up On Pulling Power

A long with ATVs, Utility Vehicles (UVs) are gaining popularity among farmers because of their practical cargo beds, designed much like a mini pick-up truck. Less expensive than a pick-up, UVs can perform many of the same tasks, saving growers time and money. Here are some choices on the UV market and reasons why they could be a valuable addition to your operation.

The Bobcat 2200 Utility Vehicle 4×4 gives buyers the choice of a 20 hp gas or 20 hp diesel engine. The gas engine is a 614 cc, air-cooled engine, while the diesel is a 719 cc, liquid-cooled engine. Both feature an automatic continuously variable transmission (CVT). Automatic locking differentials that engage immediately when a wheel loses traction, a standard 800 lb. bed load capacity, and an 11.1 in. ground clearance make this a good vehicle to have on the farm.

Goodies: Lightweight to reduce ground pressure, IntelliTrak drive system, seatbelts and an optional cab enclosure with heat. — $8,900

The Prowler XT from Arctic Cat features a 641 cc, four-stroke, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine. The Duramatic automatic transmission offers a long-life maintenance-free belt. A 12.5 in. ground clearance, 600 lb. hauling capability, 1,500 lb. towing capacity and electronically selectable 2WD-4WD all make the Prowler valuable for farming operations.

Goodies: Large under-hood storage compartment that stores 25 lbs. of gear or doubles as a cooler to hold ice, single-hand operated tailgate latch, and a toolkit molded into the passenger side seat. — $9,499

Yamaha's Rhino 450 4×4 has a 421 cc, liquid-cooled, two-valve, OHC engine and an Ultramatic transmission with constant belt tension and automatic centrifugal clutch. With over 12 in. of ground clearance, a 400 lb. capacity dump bed and winch mounting brackets, the Rhino can perform tough duties across the farm.

Goodies: Yamaha accessories, including a 3,000 lb. winch, toolbox, front sport rack, comfortable seating and a seatbelt shoulder harness. — $7,999

Land Pride features the 10 Series Treker 4410 4×4 with a Honda 20 hp, 614 cc engine. It has an automatic transmission with an infinitely variable torque converter drive system. The Treker can carry two to three people and has removable bed sides for flatbed capabilities. It can also haul 800 lbs. of cargo.

Goodies: Standard seatbelts, four post accessory bar for protection and a mounting base for optional cargo racks and accessories. — $8,645

The Ranger 4×4 by Polaris has a 499 cc, liquid-cooled, four-valve, single-cylinder engine and an automatic Polaris Variable Transmission. Its 1,000 lb. cargo capacity and 11 in. ground clearance are useful features in the fields, and its 41 mph top speed can save growers time.

Goodies: A 1,500 lb. towing capacity, new Lock and Ride cargo system, seating for three and an optional SpeedKey system for top speed control. — $9,399

Kubota's RTV900 has a 21.6 hp, three-cylinder, water-cooled diesel engine and a three-range variable hydro transmission. The light-step, wet-type disc braking allows for quick and frequent stopping without the drop in performance due to wear, and the hydraulic dumping cargo bed makes big jobs easier.

Goodies: Seatbelts and side grab rails for extra protection, a 1,300 lb. towing capacity and many available accessory options, including a headrest, glove box and bed liner. — $9,995

E-Z-Go's ST 4×4 has an 18 hp, 641 cc, twin-cylinder Honda engine and a heavy-duty, single-ratio, continuously variable transmission (CVT). Its 9.5 in. ground clearance, 1,500 lb. payload capacity and easy access to the battery and fuses allow growers to get a lot of use out of the ST 4×4 with easy maintenance.

Goodies: A passenger side storage compartment, drink holders, two-way radio or cell phone holder and a 12-volt power outlet. — $8,500

The Mule from Kawasaki features a 617 cc, four-stroke, V-twin, liquid-cooled engine and an automatic continuously variable transmission (CVT) that has high and low range, plus reverse. A 7.2 in. ground clearance, 1,200 lb. towing capacity and an 803 lb. bed capacity allow growers to get more work done around the farm.

Goodies: Storage space under the front hood with D-rings to secure cargo, winch-ready tabs and selectable 4WD for extra traction. — $8,799

John Deere's Gator HPX 4×4 has a 617 cc, liquid-cooled, twin-cylinder Kawasaki gasoline engine. It features a two-speed continuously variable transmission (CVT) that allows for optimal towing, hauling and pulling in low gear and transport in high gear. A lower center of gravity allows for better stability and handling, and it has a 1,300 lb. towing capacity.

Goodies: A 900 lb. box capacity, optional power-lift kit, 12-volt DC outlet, cup holders and a glove box. — $9,399
