USDA released its latest Cattle on Feed report on Aug. 25, 2017.

Here are 4 points from the report:

  1. Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter in the United States on feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 10.6 million head on August 1, 2017. The inventory was 4% above Aug. 1, 2016.

  2. Placements in feedlots during July totaled 1.62 million head, 3% above 2016. Net placements were 1.57 million head.

  3. During July, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 360,000 head, 600-699 pounds were 235,000 head, 700-799 pounds were 385,000 head, 800-899 pounds were 370,000 head, 900-999 pounds were 190,000 head, and 1,000 pounds and greater were 75,000 head.

  4. Marketings of fed cattle during July totaled 1.78 million head, 4% higher than 2016.

National placements were reported up 2.7%. The average of the pre-report estimates was up about 6.1% from last year, said Dr. David Anderson, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service livestock economist in College Station.

“I think it is likely that placements in earlier months pulled cattle ahead, as has happened on the marketing side of the ledger in the first half of the year,” Anderson said. “Placements in July were lower than June, for the first time since 2007. It makes for an interesting placements chart with the counter seasonal move.

“Another interesting point is the increasing number of cattle on feed more than 120 days,” he said. “This will bear watching. We have placed more lighter weight cattle in recent months, but we certainly don’t need slower marketings.”

Higher placements in Minnesota, Nebraska and South Dakota indicated more cattle moving to Corn Belt feeders, but on the other side of that, Iowa placements were below a year ago, Anderson said.
