UAPB aquaculture/fisheries field day

PINE BLUFF, Ark. — The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Aquaculture/Fisheries Center of Excellence Field Day will be held Oct. 7 at the UAPB fish ponds in Pine Bluff.

The demonstrations and activities will begin at 8:30 a.m. with registration. The field day includes the mid-year meetings of the Catfish Farmers of Arkansas and the Arkansas Bait and Ornamental Fish Growers Association.

“The UAPB Center of Excellence conducts a field day once every two years to provide the state’s fish farmers with the latest in research,” says Carole Engle, professor and head of the UAPB Aquaculture/Fisheries Department at the Center of Excellence.

“Also, participants will see demonstrations of practical disinfection methods to prevent fish diseases, an easier way to crowd fish toward the in-pond fish grader, fish sampling by trawl, stocking for large shiners and a sock saver being evaluated by USDA-Agricultural Research Service.”

Information will be available on an alternative to Baytex, new catfish stocking rate studies, water quality and financial analysis.

On the agenda are continuous tours of one-hour duration to each of six learning stations at various ponds at the research station. UAPB has 113 research ponds on its facility.

Occurring simultaneously will be walking tours to seven learning stations.

Poster presentations, exhibits and a skin cancer screening will also be a part of the day’s activities.
