A summer promotion of California almonds in the United Kingdom is proving to be a big hit.

In partnership with the leading UK distributor Whitworth, walnuts from the Golden State are featured in a free-standing display for 12 weeks in 780 Tesco stores, according to the California Walnut Commission.

The 200-gram packs of walnuts situated on the top two shelves in stores have outsold weekly sales of Diet Coke through the first four weeks of the promotion, the organization reports.

The promotion has so far 17 metric tons of incremental sales and could exceed 50 metric tons by the promotion’s end, according to commission officials. A metric ton is a little more than 1.1 tons.

The promotion is “adding a significant … incremental sales value to Tesco and looks set to become the highest performing fixture featuring walnuts ever implemented by Tesco,” the walnut commission declared in a release.

Tesco is one of the largest retailers in the UK and also has shops in Ireland, the Czech Republic and elsewhere in Europe. The retailer had 4,673 stores total as of 2021, according to the company.

The UK-based Whitworths sells dried fruit, nuts, home baking and other products.

The walnut commission handles health research and export development, while the California Walnut Board is in charge of domestic promotion and production research.

The UK effort comes as the commission is touting research from the USDA and University of Illinois showing that consuming walnuts may help promote gut health.

People who ate about 1.5 ounces of walnuts per day for three weeks experienced a decrease in secondary bile acids, which may play a role in colon cancer, inflammation, and gastrointestinal diseases, according to the study.
