The bond of pollinators and plants: If one disappears, the other may follow. Honey bees and other insects pollinate over 80 percent of flowering plants. Bee pollination is vital to agriculture — directly responsible for $20 billion in added U.S. crop values.
The work rate of honey bees is staggering: A bee colony may log up to 55,000 miles in flight distance to gather nectar for a single pound of honey and a single worker bee may visit up to 2,000 flowers each day.
