California walnut growers voted yes by a whopping 90-percent plus vote to continue the federal marketing order on the tasty tree nut.

With all ballots counted, 95 percent of eligible growers who voted with 93 percent of the walnut volume voted yes to continue the measure. A two-thirds vote of growers and production was required to pass the referendum.

The federal marketing order was amended in 2008 to require a continuance referendum vote every six years. This was the first referendum conducted.

The federal marketing order regulates the handling of walnuts grown in California.

Those eligible to vote in the referendum were growers who engaged in California walnut production from Sept. 1, 2012 through Aug. 31, 2013.
