Editor's note: Here's a look at the five most innovative products I saw at the 2017 National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville, Ky.

If you watch TV at all around the holidays, you’ve likely seen the following commercial for M&M's: Two talking pieces of M&M candy are sneaking up on the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve. They hear a noise. Suddenly they see Santa Claus. One says to the other, "Wow, he really is real!” Santa, in his bright red suit, looks at the M&M's and says, "Wow, they really are real!” Then he immediately passes out and falls over!

That’s how I felt when I saw the prototype of the world’s first "smart" Keeton Seed Firmer at the Precision Planting booth during the National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville, Ky. The idea was so out-of-this-world that when I first received the press release earlier this year, I checked to make sure it was real before featuring it in the Hi-Tech Farming column. Then I saw the seed firmer for myself at the National Farm Machinery Show, along with several other innovative products. Here are my top five from the show.
