No one launched a multi-hybrid planter that you could buy this year, and no one made any definite game-changing announcements when it comes to planters and planter attachments. But several companies introduced new planter models and products for planters that promise to earn their way onto farms. And in a couple of cases, new technology that isn’t even a product yet was unveiled that might be revolutionary in the future. The multi-hybrid, multi-row-width planter developed by Beck’s and other companies (pictured above) was at farm shows, but it’s not for sale. It will be used in Beck’s Practical Farm Research trials.

Harvest International, Kinze and Case IH did display new planters for sale. For Case IH, it was the latest edition of the Classic Early Riser planter series.

Other companies displayed products that can take some guesswork out of planting, including the new fertilizer monitor from Intelligent Ag. It allows you to know from the cab if a row unit is not delivering starter fertilizer properly.

360 Yield Center showed two possible products for fertilizer placement — one likely to appear for 2018. It involves placing starter fertilizer on both sides of the row. This concept has attracted interest since it was discovered that the Georgia farmer who set the National Corn Growers Association Yield Contest record with more than 500 bushels per acre uses this approach.

The other 360 Yield Center product involves timing fertilizer release over the seed trench so only the 2- inch zone where the seed resides gets fertilizer. It’s still under development. The idea is to put product where plants can use it most, and cut down on the total amount of product applied.
