Sugarcane Field Day set July 16

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. with field tours starting at 9 a.m.

The tours will include discussions of reduced tillage programs, weed control, sugarcane ripeners and sugarcane varieties, including the new variety (HoCP 96-540) just released by the AgCenter.

Displays in the assembly hall will feature posters on the Mexican rice borer, sugarcane mulch management and water quality.

Guest speakers at this year's field day include John Gay, chairman of the board, and Charlie Melancon, president and general manager, both with the American Sugar Cane League headquartered in Thibodaux.

The LSU AgCenter also will present high yield certificates to growers from Iberville, Pointe Coupee, St. Charles, St. John and West Baton Rouge parishes.

The sugar station is located at the LSU AgCenter's St. Gabriel Research Station on Louisiana Highway 30, 11 miles south of Tiger Stadium or 9 miles north of Gonzales.

A sponsored lunch will be provided at noon. For further information about the field day, contact the station at (225) 642-8105.
