The Environmental Protection Agency and the North Dakota Department of Agriculture recently approved three herbicides for use on North Dakota crops this year, according to Richard Zollinger, NDSU Extension weed specialist.

Axial Star

Axial Star herbicide has been approved by the EPA as a tool for cross-spectrum grass and broadleaf weed control in wheat (not durum) and barley.

The premix herbicide contains the active ingredients in Axial (pinoxaden) and Starane (fluroxypyr). Both ingredients will allow full crop rotation flexibility the following year after small grains.

Callisto

The North Dakota Department of Agriculture has issued a special local needs (SLN) registration to Syngenta Crop Protection, allowing aerial application of Callisto to control broadleaf weeds in cornfields.

This will make Callisto, along with most other POST corn herbicides, available for aerial application.

Apply Callisto at 3 fl oz/A, apply when wind speed is less than 10 mph, allow a 50-foot buffer between the area to be treated and adjacent sensitive plant species, and possess the SLN label during application. The SLN registration will expire Aug. 15, 2011.

Ignite

Bayer Crop Science recently received a new label amendment allowing use of Ignite up to 65 fl oz/A on soybeans in a cropping season.

Ignite can be used at 36 fl oz/A followed by 29 fl oz/A in crop.  This amendment also allows the use of AMS on soybeans.  This is a good management tool for growers using the Liberty Link soybean system and will demonstrate the value of Ignite on a wide weed spectrum, especially on glyphosate resistant weeds.

Spartan

Spartan has received a full federal registration (Section 3) for use on flax overriding any further need for Section 18 registration.
