Acting Agriculture Secretary Chuck Conner says he won't speculate on the timing of a new world trade agreement. He says there has been progress on the technical side, although there is still a ways to go, but he is optimistic that at some point there will be a successful conclusion to the Doha Round.
"We have said, and there has been no change in the U.S. position in this regard, that we are flexible in terms of our own trade distorting domestic supports, but at the same time we will only talk about those when the rest of the world is talking about giving us market access," Conner says. "The rest of the world is realizing that we are serious about this and that we have some chance of pulling this together."
So agriculture and market access continue to be the stumbling blocks that keep the trade talks from moving forward.
