WRDA on the Move in Congress

The Water Resources Development Act, introduced Tuesday in the House, is expected to come out of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee this week.

After being stuck in Congress for seven years, the Water Resources Development Act may be getting somewhere in the House of Representatives.

The legislation - which failed in the previous Congress - was introduced again Tuesday by House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman James Oberstar, and has already come out of subcommittee. Today it is expected to make its way through the full committee, paving the way for a House vote, possibly in the next few weeks.

This version of the bill would provide funding similar to last year's, with $1.79 billion going for seven 1200 foot locks, $1.58 billion for environmental restoration and $235 million for small-scale navigation upgrades, including infrastructure improvements to the Upper Mississippi and Illinois River System.
