Wisconsin Cattlemen's Winter Conference Planned Feb. 14-15

The Wisconsin Cattlemen's Association and cooperating organizations hope to build on the success of the joint conference that was held in previous years. More than 300 producers and members of the Wisconsin beef industry joined together for the two-day event in 2013. The groups are looking forward to another great opportunity for the Wisconsin beef industry to gather and interact for an informative and entertaining weekend.

This year's conference will feature a full day of educational sessions and meetings presented by the Wisconsin Cattlemen's Association on Friday, Feb. 14. Saturday, Feb. 15, will include the Wisconsin Cattlemen's and Wisconsin Shorthorn Associations' annual meetings. In addition on Saturday there will be an educational session over the lunch hour.

Educational programs

This year's educational programs will cover a variety of interests. Speakers will cover topics including areas such as branding meats, industry challenges, nutrition, genomics and hedging strategies. Speakers and topics of the conference include:

•Jeff Swenson, DATCP livestock and meat specialist and Dr. Jeff Sindelar, Extension meat specialist discussing branding Wisconsin meat.

•Amanda Radke, BEEF Daily editor will present information on how societal shifts, government regulations, activist threats and consumer demands are changing the way ranchers do business. Attendees will learn about current industry challenges that producers face in meeting new demands for beef at the grocery store and explore ways to find success in extremely volatile times.

•Chad Howlett, Vita Plus beef business and technical manager will discuss least cost versus best cost beef diets.

•An industry panel featuring Brian McCulloh-Woodhill Farms, Phil Dieter-East Central Select Sires, Jerry Cassady-American Angus Association, and Bill Zimmerman-American Simmental Association will present on the use of genomics in beef production today.

•Alexis Nickelotti, director of online communications, Wisconsin Beef Council will share how social media is the bridge of communication with consumers. Attendees will learn how the Wisconsin Beef Council is joining those conversations to ensure consumers are making educated decisions.

•The 2014 NCBA president, Bob McCan, will provide an industry and national update at the evening awards banquet. The Wisconsin Cattlemen's Association will be presenting the Friend of the Cattlemen and Cattleman of the Year.  After the banquet, entertainment will be provided by "The Monkey Business Institute," an improv comedy show which will be fun and fast paced.

•The Legislative Update will be conducted by Terry Quam, Legislative Committee chairperson of the Wisconsin Cattlemen's Association.
