Urbanite singles have "speed dating". And this summer, the Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont has been hosting a real test of attraction and togetherness – weed dating for single farmers and food enthusiasts.
The last dating event of the season wraps up with apple harvest on October 16 at Shelburne Orchards at Shelburne, Vt. Three weed dating events held earlier this year were well received by farmers and weeders alike.
Weed dating is a whimsical and dressed-down version of speed dating, explains Caitlin Gildrien, outreach coordinator for NOFA Vermont. Interested individuals get their hands dirty helping area farmers while connecting with like-minded neighbors.
The events aim to strengthen community bonds through friendship and companionship. They also tighten the relationships between farmers and consumers, adds Gildrien.
Attendees get a tour of Shelburne Orchards and will help strip-pick apple trees. Fruit harvested during the event will be donated to the Vermont Food Bank.
Farm experience isn't required, and all are welcome. But pre-registration is required. For more information or to register, visit nofavt.org/events/weed-dating or contact the NOFA-VT office at (802) 434-4122 or email@example.com.
