Dockworkers were on the job at West Coast ports this week as negotiations continue to reach a new contract to replace the one that expired on Monday.
The negotiations have been closely watched by a number of industries, including agriculture, as the 30 ports affected by contract talks handle more than 40% on the container cargo that comes into and goes out of the country.
The coast-wide labor contract is between employers who operate port terminals and shipping lines represented by the Pacific Maritime Association and dockworkers represented by the International LongShore and Warehouse Union.
In a joint statement earlier this week, the PMA and ILWU said work will continue at the ports.
"While there will be no contract extension, cargo will keep moving, and normal operations will continue at the ports until an agreement can be reached between the Pacific Maritime Association and the International Longshore & Warehouse Union," it said. "Both sides understand the strategic importance of the ports to the local, regional and US economies.
