Were PSU Trustees Right To Fire Paterno?

Were PSU Trustees Right To Fire Paterno?

IBOPE Zogby poll affirms Penn State Trustees' decision; 70% would call police on workplace child sexual abuse. Six PSU trustees are agriculturalists.

Penn State is still very much in the "new hot seat" regarding the institution's handling of former football coach Jerry Sandusky's alleged child sexual abuse. And few are in a hotter seat than Penn State's Board of Trustees.

At least six of the 25 appointed trustees are well known for their ag leadership roles, and four are Master Farmers. More on that shortly.

Yesterday, IBOPE Zogby International released results of its latest online poll. It confirmed the Penn State trustees' decision to fire long-time head football coach Joe Paterno.

A strong majority of adults (70%) polled say they would immediately call the police if they witnessed sexual abuse in their workplace, then tell a supervisor. And 70% say they agree with Penn State's decision to fire Paterno due to the allegations his former defensive coordinator abused young boys at Penn State football facilities.

The interactive survey of 2,100 adults, conducted from 11/15 to 11/17 asked: If you witnessed child sexual abuse by a superior in your workplace, would you . . .

Call the police immediately and then tell supervisor

First tell a supervisor, and then follow up to make sure proper reporting to the authorities had taken place

Talk to the superior of the person you witnessed with the child

Not sure

A sampling of IBOPE Zogby International's online panel, which is representative of the adult population of the US, was invited to participate. The margin of error is +/- 2.2 percentage points.

Hindsight analysis by unrelated parties is far simpler than when careers and professional/personal relationships are involved.
