Water Quality Grants Issued

USDA is giving more than $11 million to universities nationwide.

Universities across the nation have received more than $11 million from USDA's Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service to study water supply and water quality issues in rural, agricultural and urbanizing watersheds.

Two of the projects CSREES is funding will address water resources issues dealing with bioenergy production. Washington State University will examine the impacts of using irrigation on switchgrass for bioenergy and the University of Wisconsin is looking at the impact environmentally and economically of the emerging bio-economy in 14 Midwest states.

"As we move forward in developing our capacity to produce biofuels, we must understand the impacts on our natural resources," acting Agriculture Secretary Chuck Conner said. "These studies will help government, industry and farmers and ranchers make the most environmentally sound and sustainable choices to produce bioenergy."
