Visit Food & Farming Exhibit At State Fair

"The Biggest Loser" at-home winner, a grammy award winning band, and other celebrities will help build a first-of-its-kind Iowa State Fair exhibit.

Don't miss the "Together We CAN!" food and farming exhibit August 11-21 at this year's Iowa State Fair in Des Moines. Celebrities will help construct a larger-than-life farm and food creation made of canned food. The event is sponsored by the Iowa Food & Family Project and it will benefit the Iowa Food Bank Association and help provide food for food-insecure Iowans.

Des Moines native Rebecca Meyer, the Season 8 at-home $100,000 winner of NBC's "The Biggest Loser" and members of Casting Crowns, a Grammy-award winning Christian rock band, highlight the cast of "celebrity" builders who will help construct a "Together We CAN!" food and farming exhibit at the Fair.

Farm groups and others will donate food items to Iowa Food Bank

Located in the south atrium of the Varied Industries Building 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, "Together We CAN!" will feature larger-than-life replicas of the Iowa State Fair butter cow (in honor of its 100th anniversary), a milk carton, market-size hog and landscape of soybeans and corn fields — all sculpted from thousands of cans of food.

The "Together We CAN!" exhibit, presented by the Iowa Food & Family Project (Iowa FFP), will feature the work of Canstruction, the most unique food charity in the world. Following the fair, all food items used in the exhibit as well as cash donations provided by fairgoers will be given to the Iowa Food Bank Association (IFBA) benefiting Iowans struggling against hunger.

"I'm delighted to be a part of the Together We CAN! exhibit," Meyer says. "It's a pleasure to participate in activities like this which allow me to give back and pay my good fortune forward. The whirlwind that has been my life since being on 'The Biggest Loser' is never more fulfilling than when I have a chance to support nonprofit organizations like the Iowa Food & Family Project and the Iowa Food Bank Association whose efforts are devoted to making others' lives better."

Purpose is to encourage awareness of farming, healthy food, etc.

The purpose of the exhibit is to encourage conversations about farming, inspire greater awareness of the commitment of Iowa farmers to providing healthy food for everyone and help people and families struggling with hunger, says Aaron Putze, director of external relations for the Iowa Soybean Association and coordinator of the Iowa FFP.

"We're thrilled to work with Rebecca and all of our celebrity builders on this project because we share their passion of wanting to help others," Putze says. "Food is essential for life and it's provided by farmers. Working together, we can gather around the table, have meaningful conversations about farming and assist Iowans in need."

Meyer will be at the display from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13. Members of Casting Crowns, the contemporary Christian rock band with nearly 4.5 million career album sales, will also lend a hand to the effort on Thursday, Aug. 11, prior to their grandstand appearance

Sponsors of this project include many Iowa farm organizations

Other celebrity builders include Iowa State University mascot Cy and Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey on Thursday, Aug. 11. The winner of the Iowa Grocery Industry Association's "Best Bagger" contest and Jim Hallihan, president of the Iowa Sports Foundation, will offer their helping hands Friday, Aug. 12, and Sunday, Aug. 14, respectively.

Sponsors of "Together We CAN!" include the Iowa Soybean Association, Midwest Dairy Association, Iowa Pork Producers Association, Hy-Vee, Syngenta, Iowa State Fair, Iowa Food Bank Association and United Soybean Board.

The Iowa Food & Family Project is a purpose-driven initiative dedicated to nurturing positive and enduring relationships between farmers and consumers through personal engagement and advocacy. It involves more than 20 farm, retail and food relief organizations and celebrates the continuous improvement of Iowa's farmers and their commitment to providing healthy food for everyone. It's funded in part by the Soybean checkoff.
