Victor Technologies Offers Welding Gas Regulators Designed to Absorb Shock

To protect the "weak link" of gas cylinders new regulators have collapsible features Iand gas deflection.

I remember vividly the World War II story my SeaBee father told me of his watching a high-pressure oxygen cylinder ricocheting down a naval base road after it fell from a truck and ruptured the valve at the top of the bottle.

That valve on top of welding gas cylinders is truly a weak link if bottles fall or are dropped, and the results can be deadly as thousands of pounds of compressed product jet out of the damaged cylinder.

Victor Technologies has designed its new regulator assemblies for its welding machines to absorb several times the potential shock a full gas cylinder might generate in a fall, says Mike Cook, one of Victor's district managers in Oklahoma.

Welding gas regulators from Victor Technologies now incorporate "crash proven" designs similar to automobile collapsible steering columns and steering wheels to lessen the danger of breaking valve assemblies off gas cylinders.

"The adjustment knob has three collapsible sections designed into it between the knob and the regulator assembly, so it will act as an automobile's collapsible steering column in a head-on collision," he explained. "Also, the knob is designed as a gas deflector to direct any escaping gas from a rupture into the knob and then out the base of the knob -- away from the operator," he explains.

Unlike traditional exposed brass regulator hardware, the new Victor regulators feature large control knobs that are easy to use, and easy to turn --  even with gloved hands.
