USMEF Still Wants Traceability

USMEF Still Wants Traceability

Exports endangered without viable animal ID system, group says.

The U.S. Meat Export Federation is continues trying to bring a viable system of traceability to the nation's meat-animal industries.

Long on record as a proponent of traceability, the USMEF has formed a task force to help it work with partners such as NCBA to forge an animal ID system beef producers and others can get behind.

Keith Miller, current chairman of the USMEF, says it's imperative we form such a system for the sake of our exports and for disease control.

Our trading partners are asking for such a system, Miller says. Further, a major outbreak of disease such as the foot-and-mouth incident in South Korea could be much better controlled with a traceability system in place

Already, Canada has made inroads in the Chinese beef markets we haven't been able to crack because it has a working system of traceability, Miller says.
