USDA Forecast: Big Crops For N.D.

USDA reports production up significantly from 2011, when acres and yields were down due to too much rain.

USDA lates crop estimates shows some big crop number for North Dakota, which is coming off lower yields due to too much water in 2011.

Corn up 80% - Corn production is forecast at a record high 390 million bushels, up 16% from the September forecast and 80% from 2011, according to the USDA, NASS, North Dakota Field Office. Based on conditions as of October 1, yields are expected to average 115 bushels per harvested acre, up 10 bushels from the September forecast and 10 bushels from 2011. Planted acreage increased to a record high 3.6 million acres from 3.4 million acres in June. Area to be harvested for grain is estimated at a record high 3.39 million acres, up 65% from last year.

USDA Forecast: Big Crops For N.D.

Soybeans up 42% - Soybean production is forecast at a record high 160 million bushels, up 25% from the September forecast and 42% from last year. Yields are expected to average 34.0 bushels per harvested acre, up 6 bushels from September and 5.5 bushels from 2011. Planted acreage increased to a record high 4.75 million acres from 4.60 million in June. Area to be harvested is estimated at a record high 4.70 million acres, up from 3.95 million acres last year.

Dry Edible Beans up 137% - Dry edible bean production is forecast at a record high 11.7 million hundredweight (cwt), up 137% from last year. Yield is forecast at a record high 1,700 pounds per harvested acre, up from 1,300 pounds last year.  Planted acres increased to 700,000 from 690,000 in August. Area for harvest is expected to be 690,000 acres, up 82% from last year.

Sunflower Production Up 63% - All Sunflower (oil and non-oil) production is forecast at 1.25 billion pounds, up 63% from 2011. The average yield for all sunflower is forecast at 1,485 pounds per harvested acre, up from 1,366 pounds last year. Planted acres increased to 860,000 from 740,000 in June. This includes a 120,000 acre increase in oil sunflower to 770,000 acres. Area for harvest is 840,000 acres, up 50% from 2011.  

Canola up 61% - Canola production is forecast at 2.06 billion pounds, up 61% from 2011. If realized, the yield would be 1,420 pounds per acre, down from 1,500 pounds last year. Planted acreage increased 160,000 acres from June to 1,460,000 acres. Area for harvest is estimated at 1,450,000 acres, up 71% from 2011. Planted acreage estimates for selected crops were updated based on a review of administrative data. Harvested acreages were also updated to reflect the adjustments made to the planted acres.
