USDA Expands Beef Recall Over E. Coli Scare

More than 5.7 million pounds of fresh and frozen meat from a Southern California packer are being recalled.

United Food Group LLC is boosting the size of its recall of fresh and frozen beef to 5.7 million pounds, noting the product could be tainted by E. coli bacteria, according to USDA. While the outbreak has infected 14 people in six Western states, all of those infected have recovered, the agency adds.

The beef, butchered in April, is no longer on food shelves, but consumer freezers could contain the products, according to wire reports. USDA is asking consumers to return the meat if they have any. United Food's initial recall identified 75,000 pounds of meat, but three days later that amount rose to 370,000 pounds. The new tally was expanded "out of an abundance of caution" according to a USDA statement.

The labels of products subject to the recall bear the establishment number "EST. 1241" inside the USDA mark of inspection or printed on the package. All the products have a "use by/sell by" date between April 15 and May 7, and a "freeze by" date between April 23 and May 7.

The beef was sold mainly in Western states.
