USDA Awards Cooperative Development and Community Facility Grants

Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns announced over $12 million in grants from USDA this week.

More than $3.6 million has been awarded to help Rural Cooperative Development Centers improve the economic condition of rural areas in 18 states.

"These funds will help strengthen the rural economy and assist farmers, ranchers, and rural business owners across the nation in establishing and marketing cooperatives," Johanns said. "Rural Cooperative Development Centers are important to our efforts to support rural America's entrepreneurs."

Also this week USDA announced $9.2 million in Community Facilities grants to 30 states and the Western Pacific to improve public safety, health care and educational services in.

"These grants will enhance the quality of life for rural citizens and communities across the country," Johanns said. "Most of these grants will fund projects that address public safety needs in rural areas, such as purchasing first responder vehicles and medical equipment."

Schools, libraries, and hospitals are just a few of the public services in rural areas that Community Facilities grants help finance. Part of the money is being awarded under the Economic Impact Initiative.
