USDA Secretary Mike Johanns will join FARMFEST's Feature Forum on Tuesday, August 7, according to Kent Thiesse, FARMFEST Forum Coordinator.
Secretary Johanns will be a participant on the 10:30 a.m. panel that will be discussing "The New Farm Bill: Shaping the Future of Rural America" (Editor's note: This is a time change for Secretary Johanns. Earlier schedules said he would be at FARMFEST for a noon program).
Johanns will join Minnesota Seventh District Congressman Collin Peterson, who is Chair of the U.S. House Agriculture Committee, First District Congressman Tim Walz, also a member of the U.S. House Ag Committee, as well as Senator Norm Coleman and Senator Amy Klobuchar, who both sit on the U.S. Senate Ag Committee.
To have Johanns, Peterson and other Congressional leaders from Minnesota at FARMFEST during the developmental stage of the next Farm Bill is "outstanding," says Thiesse.
"Secretary Johanns and Congressman Peterson are among the key ag leaders nationally related to the development of the new Farm Bill," he says. "Senators Coleman and Klobuchar, along with Congressman Walz, also have been quite active in its development. This Forum will offer an excellent opportunity for an interactive public discussion on various titles and provisions of a potential new Farm Bill."
FARMFEST 2007 offers an exciting line-up of Feature Forums and the annual Farm Family of the Year Recognition. The Forums will be held August 7, 8, and 9, in the Forum Tent on the FARMFEST Site, which is located at the Gilfillan Estate, 7 miles southeast of Redwood Falls.
Feature Forums are scheduled at 10:30 AM and 1:30 PM each day. The Forum schedule for 2007 has a heavy emphasis on National and State agriculture policy issues and toward strengthening the rural economy in Minnesota, and will feature special forums on the 2007 Farm Bill, global warming and developing future land use policy.
All of the Forums will provide ample time for audience questions, and follow-up discussion by Panel members. Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty will give the keynote address for the Farm Family Recognition Program on Thursday, August, August 9, at 1:30 PM, which will recognize 65 County Farm Families of the Year from throughout Minnesota.
