U-M Field Days Showcase New Wheat Varieties

U-M Field Days Showcase New Wheat Varieties

Eight trial plots have been seeded with Rollag and Prosper, the two new hard red spring wheat varieties.

Two new hard red spring wheat varieties for the 2012 growing season will be previewed at Minnesota field days in July.

The two varieties are Rollag, which will be released by the Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station, and Prosper, a joint release from North Dakota State University and the Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station.

The wheat variety Rollag, tested as MN05214-3, has excellent straw strength and scab resistance equivalent to the best varieties available today. The wheat variety Prosper, tested as ND 808, is a sister line of Faller and has, overall, a similar performance to Faller under Minnesota conditions and may show a slight increase in yield, test weight, and grain protein in some years.

The field days that have plots where growers can see the two new wheat varieties include:

-July 7, Organic Field Day Southwest Research and Outreach Center (Lamberton)

-July 8, West Central Research and Outreach Center Field Day (Morris)

-July 11, Red River On-Farm Yield Trials Plot Tours (Fergus Falls 5 pm)

-July 12, Red River On-Farm Yield Trials Plot Tours (Perley 5 pm)

-July 13, Red River On-Farm Yield Trials Plot Tours (Oklee 9 am)

-July 19, Red River On-Farm Yield Trials Plot Tours (Hallock 9 am)

-July 19, Red River On-Farm Yield Trials Plot Tours (Strathcona 1 pm)

-July 21, Northwest Research and Outreach Center Field Day ( Crookston)

U-M researchers have been evaluating and developing wheat varieties since 1889.

Both new releases will be distributed through Minnesota Crop Improvement Association members.
