Two Nebraska swine operations have been named 2008 Pork Industry Environmental Stewards. They are Enterprise Nursery near Madrid and the Terry and Diane O'Neel operation near Friend.
Enterprise Nursery at Madrid houses raises pigs from 15 to 55 pounds that will eventually become replacement gilts for Nebraska Pork Partners of Columbus. The manure enters a lined lagoon and is spread on cropland through center pivots that are not connected to a water source.
Principals in the operation are Joyce and Gary Cullen and Regina Berry. Their landscaping efforts were praised.
Terry and Diane O'Neel and their children, Ethan and Danielle, of Friend have a well-landscaped, farrow-to-finish swine operation with a three-stage lagoon system that makes extensive use of horizontal biofilters to reduce odor. They are also active in their community and in the swine industry.
