Two Big Field Days in N.D. This Week

Crop tours get underway in Carrington and Minot July 15 and 16.

At the Carrington Research and Extension Center Tuesday, two crop tours will be conducted during the event. Highlighted will be variety performance, production management and opportunities of selected crops. Also discussed will be crop pest management, soil management and plant nutrition.

The morning tour will begin at 9:30. The tour will include a review of spring wheat and barley cultivars by NDSU plant breeders Mohamed Mergoum and Richard Horsley. Also, corn and soybean production issues will be reviewed by NDSU Extension agronomists Joel Ransom and Greg Endres. In addition, biofuel opportunities will be discussed by Cole Gustafson, NDSU biofuels economist. DoKyoung Lee, NDSU research agronomist, will do a presentation on biomass for cellulosic biofuels.

Following a noon lunch, tour participants will be able to attend the second crop tour starting at 1 p.m. Jan Knodel, NDSU Extension entomologist, will discuss management of soybean aphids and sunflower seed insects. Marcia McMullen and Sam Markell, NDSU Extension plant pathologists, will review small-grain diseases, fungicide strategies and the threat of row crop diseases this season. Richard Zollinger and Kirk Howatt, NDSU weed scientists, will discuss this season's weed management challenges and issues, including herbicide injury and tank mixtures for glyphosate in Roundup Ready corn and soybeans.

Also, during the afternoon tour, participants will view a soil pit and hear a discussion by Hal Weiser, Natural Resources Conservation Service soil scientist, on the impact of below-ground factors that affect crop production.

Lee, Endres, Paul Hendrickson and Ron Weiderholt, CREC agronomists, will review plant nutrition research and recommendations that include nitrogen and phosphorus rates and placement and the use of manure to reduce fertilizer costs.

Minot event

The North Central Research Extension Center in Minot will hold its annual field day on July 16.

The event begins at 9 a.m. with refreshments and rolls and a welcome from Jay Fisher, NCREC director. The field day tour will begin at 9:30 a.m.

One of highlights of this year's field day is a presentation by Cole Gustafson, NDSU Extension Service biofuels economist. Gustafson will describe NDSU's new Bio Energy and Product Innovation Center and his new role as a biofuels economist created by the North Dakota Legislature.

Gustafson will present an overview of new projects being initiated including dry pea to ethanol, nonfood sugar beets to ethanol, canola biocomposites and biojet fuel for the military. He also will give an overview of the 2007 Energy Act and its implications for North Dakota crop acreage demand, cellulosic feedstock supply, livestock feed availability, energy independence and global warming.

Other topics and presenters are:

  • Barley – Richard Horsley, NDSU barley breeder.
  • Durum – Elias Elias, NDSU durum breeder.
  • Hard red spring wheat – Mohamed Mergoum, NDSU hard red spring wheat breeder.
  • Oats – Michael McMullen, NDSU oats breeder.
  • Weed control in small grains – Kirk Howatt, NDSU weed specialist.
  • Disease control in cereal grains – Marcia McMullen, NDSU plant pathologist.
  • Farmstead and home energy audits, Carl Pedersen, NDSU energy educator.

A pest diagnostic clinic will be available throughout the day to help people identify weed, disease or insect problems. Participants may bring plant samples or insect specimens to the clinic.

People attending the event also will be able to get their water tested free of charge for nitrates, total dissolved solids, pH (acidity or alkalinity) and hardness. Samples should be collected in any clean plastic bottle capable of holding 15 to 20 ounces. NDSU Extension water quality specialists recommend that people allow their water to run for 30 seconds and then rinse the bottle three times before filling it.
