'Techie Farmer' Panel Considered for South By Southwest Event

'Techie Farmer' Panel Considered for South By Southwest Event
SXSW voters get chance to decide which panel discussions will be heard during the festival; Discussion on 'Techie Farmers' is up for a vote

A discussion on today's 'techie farmers' may become part of the South By Southwest festival and conference program, set for next March, if it passes through a round of voting by SXSW stakeholders and organizers.

The panel is one of the many proposed discussions offered by the SXSW community. Zach Hunnicutt, a fifth-generation Nebraska farmer, Sylvester Oikeh of the African Agricultural Technology Foundation, Ty Vaughn of Monsanto and Rachel Bina of Spencer Bina Farms are scheduled to participate on the panel, if it passes a round of voting that will conclude Sept. 5.

Zach Hunnicutt, a fifth-generation Nebraska farmer, is featured in a SXSW panel proposal video for 'Techie Farmers'

Titled "Today's Techie Farmers: They Aren't Who You Think," the proposed panel is currently moving through the voting process on the SXSW "Panelpicker." If selected, the panel promises to focus on farmers who are using modern technology to produce crops and maintain land.

It will also answer five questions: What technologies do today’s farmers use in food production?; What are the biggest challenges facing today’s farmers, and what solutions are available for them?; How does agricultural technology impact the use of environmental resources?; What’s the difference between technology and biotechnology?; and How does farming differ between the U.S. and other countries?

Anyone interested in voting can either sign in or create a SXSW account, then use the icons in the upper right-hand corner to vote. Visitors may also leave comments.

Ultimately, the panels selected to participate in SXSW will be selected based on 30% of public votes, 30% on SXSW staff votes and 40% on advisory board votes.

SXSW is an annual music, independent film and emerging technology conference and festival. It will run March 13-22, 2015, in Austin, Texas.
