Teams from Barron, Marquette Counties Win Junior Dairy Competition

Results are in from the Wisconsin Junior State Fair Dairy Herdsmanship Competition.

Wisconsin junior dairy exhibitors put their best foot forward to promote the state's dairy industry at the 2008 Wisconsin Junior State Fair. County exhibits featuring elite groups of cattle and incorporating dairy promotion themes were judged in the herdsmanship competition. Dairy youth exhibitors from 43 counties competed for the title of champion herdsmen.

Barron County won the large-herd competition, edging Sauk County by 26 points, followed in order of rank by Fond du Lac, Dodge, Green, and Polk counties. Nineteen counties competed in this division, which consist of groups of 20 or more animals.

Marquette County won the small herd division, representing groups with five to 19 animals. Five other of the 24 counties competing also received blue ribbons. Monroe, Door, Winnebago, Portage, and Crawford counties were the other winners.

Judges rated the groups on the preparation and care of the exhibit, including care of the animals, appearance, and attitude of their youth exhibitors. Judges included extension personnel, Wisconsin agriculture instructors, as well as agricultural journalists, dairy farmers and A.I. representatives. Representatives from counties that received either blue or red group recognition in last year's competition also judged the event.

In a separate category, displays were judged on their originality, attractiveness, and educational value to the public. "Let's Get MOOving-Wisconsin is America's Dairyland" was this year's theme. Door, Kewaunee, and Polk counties won special recognition for their displays. Each county that prepared a suitable educational display $50 for its efforts.
