Two new faces will be at the table when the Indiana Soybean Alliance Board meets in January. They were recently elected as farmer directors representing their respective districts, notes Megan Kuhn, media director for the Indiana Soybean Alliance.
Jeanette Merritt of Peru was elected to represent District 1 in northwest Indiana. That district includes 21 counties. They' re Benton, Carroll, Cass, Clinton, Elkhart, Fulton, Howard, Jasper, Kosciusko, LaPorte, Lake, Marshall, Miami, Newton, Porter, Pulaski, St. Joseph, Starke, Tipton, Wabash and White.
Merritt is part of a family farming operation that includes pork production. She also has served in various positions in communications and public relations.
Levi Huffman of Lafayette is also a newly –elected director, who will serve for the first time. With his farm located near the Tippecanoe and Carroll County line, Huffman once raised hogs, but now concentrates on grain crops plus specialty vegetable crops in a family farming operation.
He represents District 3, which includes 22 counties in west-central and southwest Indiana. They include Clay, Daviess, Dubois, Fountain, Gibson, Greene, Knox, Martin, Montgomery, Owen, Parke, Pike, Posey, Putnam, Spence, Sullivan, Tippecanoe, Vanderburgh, Vermillion, Vigo, Warren and Warrick..
Neither candidate was opposed. They join a 24-person board which holds responsibility for investing Indianan soybean checkoff funds.
Former director Jeff Jordan of Richmond in District 1rejoins the Board. Others who were re-elected to stay on the board and serve another three-year term include Kevin Wilson, Walton; Darrel McGriff, Marion; Fayte Brewer, Lafayette, Jim Cherry, Greenfield and Mark Nigh, Shelbyville.
The Indianan Soybean Alliance was once two groups- the Indiana Soybean Growers Association the Indiana Soybean Board,. A successful merger occurred several years ago. Board positions and methods of election were determined at that time.
