State's Corn, Soybean Prices, Sweet Corn Prices Up

State vegetable production, cattle inventory down while sheep, lamb and wool up.

Prices received by Minnesota farmers for corn for January averaged $5.70 per bushel, an increase of $0.18 from the December price, according to the USDA-NASS Minnesota Field Office.

Soybeans were up $0.30, to a January price of $11.50 per bushel.

The all milk price for January, at $20.40 per cwt., was down $0.60 from December.

Looking back on 2011, Minnesota's sweet corn production was estimated at 735,760 tons, down% from last year's production estimate of 821,730. Planted acreage was estimated at 124,400 acres, up 2% from the previous year. Harvested acreage of 119,900 acres was up 2% from the previous year. Average value per ton was a record high $131.00, compared to $90.70 in 2010.

U.S. processing production of eight vegetables (lima beans, snap beans, carrots, sweet corn, cucumbers for pickles, peas, spinach and tomatoes) estimated in 2011 totaled 17.0 million tons, down 4% from last year. Area harvested is estimated at 1.05 million acres, down 8% from a year ago. Processing crop value is estimated at 1.76 billion dollars, 6% above 2010.

The three largest crops, in terms of production, are tomatoes, sweet corn, and snap beans, which account for 92% of the total when combined. The top three crops in terms of value of production are tomatoes, sweet corn and cucumbers. These three processing vegetables account for 80% of the total value when combined.

For the eight processed vegetables estimated in 2011, California leads the nation with 26% of the harvested acreage, 72% of the production and 55% of the value.

Wisconsin ranks second with 19% of the harvested acreage, 6.5% of the production and 10% of the value.

Minnesota ranks third with 18.5% of the harvested acreage, 6% of the production and 8% of the value.

The Minnesota NASS office also reports that Minnesota cattle and calves inventory was 2.36 million head on January 1, 2012, down 1% from the January 1, 2011, inventory. All cattle and calves in the United States as of January 1, 2012, totaled 90.8 million head, 2% below the 92.7 million on January 1, 2011. This is the lowest January 1 inventory of all cattle and calves since the 88.1 million on hand in 1952.

Minnesota cows and heifers that have calved totaled 830,000 head on January 1, 2011, unchanged from last year. Beef cows in the state, at 365,000 head, were up 1% and milk cows, at 465,000 head, were down 1% from a year ago.

Minnesota's January 1, 2012, sheep and lamb inventory, at 150,000 head, was up 15% from last year. Breeding stock numbers were up 12% at 106,000. The remaining inventory of 44,000 market lambs and sheep was up 26% from last year.

The state's 2011 lamb crop totaled 135,000 head, up 8% from the previous year. The 2011 lambing rate was 175 per 100 ewes one year old and older on hand January 1, 2011, compared with 164 per 100 ewes in 2010.

Minnesota's 2011 wool production totaled 870,000 pounds, up 5% from the 2010 level. Minnesota is ranked 11th in 2011 U.S. wool production. The 140,000 sheep and lambs shorn in 2011 were up 8% from 2010. Fleece weight averaged 6.20 pounds, down from 6.40 pounds the previous year. Value of the state's 2011 wool production was $539,000, up 51% from the previous year's value of $357,000. Average price per pound for 2011 was 62 cents, up 19 cents from the 2010 price.
