April 2011 milk production totaled 761 million pounds in Minnesota, down 1.9% from the 776 million pounds produced in April 2010, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. Revised March 2011 milk output was 780 million pounds.
Minnesota's production per cow averaged 1,615 pounds in April 2011, down 35 pounds from last April. The revised March 2011 rate was 1,655 pounds per cow. The average number of milk cows on farms in Minnesota during April 2011 was 471,000 head, unchanged from the March 2011 number but up 1,000 from one year ago.
Accumulated Minnesota milk production for the first four months of 2011 was 3.01 billion pounds, up 1.3% from the same period a year ago.
Milk production in the 23 major States during April totaled 15.5 billion pounds, up 1.7% from April 2010. March revised production at 15.8 billion pounds, was up 2.4% from March 2010. Production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 1,834 pounds for April, 9 pounds above April 2010. The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.43 million head, 97,000 head more than April 2010, and 8,000 head more March 2011.
Accumulated milk production in the 23 major states for the first four months of 2011 was 60.4 billion pounds, up 2.3 percent from the same period a year ago.
