Small Fire at USDA Holds up Reports

Electrical fire that occurred during routine maintenance closes agency buildings.

There's a disruption in USDA reports today thanks to a small fire that has shut down both the Whitten and south buildings for the agency in Washington, DC. According to a spokesman, the fire started during routine maintenance early Monday morning and was handled quickly by the local fire department.

POWERED DOWN: A small fire that occurred during routine maintenance has closed all USDA facilities. The fire occurred in the South Building, shown here.

However, part of controlling the fire included turning power off to the facility. That gives employees administrative leave for the day. Due to the problem the Crop Progress Report - usually released at 4 p.m. EDT on Monday, as well as the Turkey Hatchery, Hatchery Production Annual Summary, and Potato Stocks reports (released at 3 p.m. EDT) will be delayed until Tuesday, April 17 at the their previously scheduled times.

If there are further changes, USDA will release a public notice in advance of the scheduled release time.

The South building of USDA received design and construction funding in 1926 and was originally designed to house offices and laboratory space. The final space was finished in 1936. It was once the largest office building in the world, until the Pentagon topped it when it was built in 1942.
