Simplify Late Planting Decisions

Simplify Late Planting Decisions

This spreadsheet evaluates the financial returns for your options.

Adverse weather and planting delays are simply a part of farming. But this year's historically high prices significantly raise the stakes when late planting decisions must be made. The University of Illinois designed a spreadsheet to help you decide between planting corn late, switching to soybeans or claiming prevented planting insurance payments. It was created for Illinois farms, but many of the data points can be customized to adapt the spreadsheet to give guidance to broad areas of the Midwest.

We’re featuring the spreadsheet as our Farm Futures Spreadsheet of the Month. The 690 kilobyte spreadsheet should work with Excel 2000, 2002, 2007 or Excel XP. You can download it by clicking on the link below.

Do you have a spreadsheet that’s made a difference on your operation that you’d be willing to share with other readers? Drop us a line at FarmFutures@farmprogress.com with a description of the spreadsheet. We’ll pay $75 if we feature your farmer-written non-commercial program as our Spreadsheet of the Month.
