There's still time to enter the Crop Watch '12 contest and win seed from Seed Consultants for 2013. However, the deadline is now less than three weeks away. Entries are due postmarked by Oct. 10 if you're mailing in an entry form from the magazine, or 11:59 EDT on Oct. 10 if you're mailing in an entry by email.
If you choose the email route, be sure to include your name, mailing address, email address, a website if you have one, your cell phone number, and how many acres of each crop you raise. Email your entry to: email@example.com in Indiana or firstname.lastname@example.org in Ohio.
Your goal is to come as close to the state USDA crop yield estimate as possible. If you were waiting to see what changes USDA made, you now know all that you will know before the October report is released. Surprisingly, the September report changed very little from the October report, except in Illinois, which dropped about six bushels per acre. Your job is to guess the USDA October estimate or the state yield in your state, not across the nation. The actual report will be released at 8:30 a.m. EDT on Oct. 11. Next year USDA has announced it will go to a mid-day release time, but that doesn't take effect until 2013.
Seed Consultants will award eight bags of corn seed for 2013 to the first place winner, which will be the person that guesses the closest to the actual yield that is released for your state by USDA. The second place winner will receive six bags of seed corn and the third place winner will get four bags of seed, still a handsome prize.
The rules allow for only one entry per family. Enter only one time. Employees of Seed Consultants are not eligible. The decision of the judges will be final. In case of ties, the winner for a prize will be determined by a random drawing.
Be sure to enter soon!
